You’ll never guess that this is a broth smoothie, since it’s packed with mixed berries, a hidden vegetable and a refreshing hint of lemon & mint.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup / 240 ml chilled bone broth, frozen in cubes if your blender can handle it
  • 1/2 cup / 70 g frozen blackberries
  • 1/2 cup / 70 g frozen raspberries
  • 1/4 cup / 40 g frozen blueberries
  • 3 oz / 85 g unpeeled, shredded purple carrot, about 1 medium
  • 2 tbsp / 20 g frozen pomegranate arils, optional
  • 1 tbsp / 15 ml fresh lemon juice, or preservative free bottled lemon juice
  • Leaves from a couple of sprigs of fresh mint, to taste

Instructions

BLEND: Add all of the ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth. If your broth isn’t frozen, you might want to add a couple cubes of ice to further chill the berry broth smoothie to your liking, but it should be pretty cold and thick if you’ve used all frozen fruit. Will keep in the fridge for 2 days; store it in a jar or bottle with a lid so that you can give it a good shake before drinking!

Notes

The final flavor of the broth smoothie will depend on the flavor of your broth. I prefer to make these with chicken or pork broth as they’re more mild & to use a broth that isn’t strongly flavored or highly salted.

I have tested this with both conventional boxed broths and with homemade, unsalted broth. The recipe works just fine with both, but using homemade and unsalted broth if you can will give you the most neutral flavored base.

Start out with 50:50 broth to water if you’re feeling a little unsure about this whole berry broth smoothie idea! Or you could add a smidge of banana for extra sweetness as counterbalance if you need it.

If you use homemade broth, note that the collagen rich broth may make your berry broth smoothie gel or set if you make it ahead and store it in the refrigerator. If that happens, just give it a good shake or re-blend it.
